Description

I’ve been wanting to make this for a loooooooong time, but I wasn’t able to find any beads with letters on them just until this week. It made me SO happy! >w< Ideally, they should have been golden with the letters on black, but these colourful ones are cute.

The pendant features a darker version of the well-known transformation brooch, plus a blue Sailor Moon slihouette on its back. The message 'Kick ass like a girl' is included on its chain.

So, some time ago I started to run into all kind of Sailor Moon fan-art featuring the words ‘like a girl’ or even ‘fight like a girl’. Not only Sailor moon fan-art, but of many other series, mainly from magical girl shows, always with the same subject. And then I found this video.

I don’t know if this campaign by Always was the seed for that wave of ‘like a girl’ fan-art, but I suspect it was. It sure was for this one :3 Whether they do care about it or not, their message is vey important. Make sure you see the video and then spread the link!

Many people like to think that sexism is dead and feminism should too, but it is not like that. Take myself as an example: even though I was raised in an equal home, I’ve lived most of my life despising feminity, assuming that ‘feminine’ was something very bad by itself, something to be avoided in orther to be worthy and respected. Education is important, but media is very, very strong, and its messages get through and shape people’s minds on an almost unconscious level.

You know, I used to be the only girl of my high school gang - I’ve always been an ‘I-want-to-be-one-of-the-boys’ girl, and also, all the girls I knew talked about nothing but clothes and make up so it was sooo stupid to waste time with them. And even though I was with them, and even though I was one more of them, they’d still use a sexist vocabulary. In Spanish, there is a great number of words that are normal in masculine but become insults just by using their female form (and most of those mean ‘prostitute’ then). And every time they used a word like that, I said ‘Don’t use female genre as a weapon!’, because I hated everything considered feminine and I assumed that stuff was associated with being weak and worthless, but still, I was a girl. I don’t hang out with any of them anymore, but I still wonder if the message really got to them or they only watched their mouths when we were together, and if they still avoid those words.

Always’ campaign is not only beautiful, but also important. You wouldn’t believe how sexist the new generations are, even more than before - so until men get the message that feminism is about them too (toxic masculinity, anyone?), let’s us at least teach women to respect themselves and live up to their true potential.
